ON NOW - June 14th
Join us for a duet with Ashdale’s mixed media/ photography based artists, Lori Bagneres and Susanne Aaltonen.
The natural world is composed of fleeting thresholds—moments where light hits a moving leaf or a ripple disturbs a shadowed pool, sparking a sudden, luminous reflection. This is the "glint": a sharp trace of light or memory that vibrates briefly before settling into the subconscious. In this duo exhibition, Lori Bagnérès and Susanne Aaltonen explore these ephemeral vibrations, transforming the transient magic of the Pacific Northwest into a permanent, layered archive of wonder.
The exhibition functions as a rhythmic dialogue between the expansive and the intimate. Lori Bagnérès leads the viewer into the atmosphere of the forest, capturing the macro-essence of the wild. Her work evokes the "call" of the woods—the weight of the air, the collective rustle of the canopy, and the broad, glistening light that filters through the trees. These pieces serve as a doorway, inviting us to step back into our own histories while simultaneously building new memories within the landscape’s embrace.
As Lori expands the horizon, Susanne Aaltonen draws the eye inward, quieting the viewer’s focus to reveal the magic hidden in the smallest details. Her work is an exploration of the micro-poetry often overlooked: the glowing luminescence of moss, the intricate geometry of a single ripple, and the quiet internal resonance of a held moment. Through her lens, the minute becomes monumental, anchoring the "essence" of the forest in the delicate traces of the subconscious.
Glint: Captured Memory is an invitation to pause within these overlooked wonders—to witness the transformation of a passing sensory spark into a lasting, visual anchor for the soul.

In my latest Arboretum series, the West Coast Forest stands as a living archive where time and memory intertwine. Here, the landscape is not merely observed; it remembers. Through the slow language of trees, each ancient sentinel acts as a storyteller, its roots tracing the past while its canopy filters the present through layers of light and loss.
Within these compositions, traces of light and ethereal orbs serve as vehicles—silent spirit guides that watch over the forest trails. These glints of colour are the captured pulse of human presence, lingering at the edges of the woods and illuminating the quiet resilience of a landscape that holds the memory of all who have, and will, pass through it.
In this duo exhibition Glint: Captured Memory we invite the viewer to listen for what endures. By merging the slow language of nature with these traces of light, we aim to map an internal terrain where physical landscape and memory converge to reveal the many layers of the human experience.

As a child, I used to wish my eyes worked like a camera - one capable of capturing the entirety of a moment. I longed to hold onto the sensory nature of memory: the feeling of a breeze, the way sunlight flickers across water, the quiet atmosphere of a place that feels familiar without fully knowing why.
Drawing from time spent in the Pacific Northwest, this body of work explores the inherently ungraspable aspects of memory - its fleeting quality, and the impulse to catch it before it disappears. It is the image that imprints itself on the inside of your eyelids, the scent that passes and brings you back, the embrace of the forest, or the salt in the air. It is the moment when you think, “yes, this is where I am meant to be.”
Each piece becomes a quiet offering - an attempt to recreate the feeling of being held within a moment, of recognition, of coming home.”
