Eliza Kożurno

  • In her recent work, Eliza explores the power of the feminine by uniting still life and portraiture. She composes each arrangement according to her sense of beauty, using the objects that surround her, attending to the ever-changing sunlight and shadows that play over it until she captures the perfect moment. Drawn from centuries of art history, the women she brings into the compositions share her personal space and enter conversation with her daily life. The slow process of painting gives her the opportunity to sit with each portrait, to think about the woman and their world, and about the women in her own life who shaped her.

    Through these paintings, Eliza portrays the feminine not as fragile, but as a gentle, enduring force, and the works become intimate spaces where presence and memory coexist.

Eliza studied painting and textile design at the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Art in Łódz, Poland. Her multidisciplinary background is evident in her treatment of pattern as compositional infrastructure rather than ornament. She has made her home in Toronto since 2002.

Eliza Kożurno's paintings reimagine still life through the lens of pattern and structure. Bold graphic textiles serve as both subject and spatial framework, their forms multiplied and distorted through reflective surfaces. Working in acrylic on canvas, she creates optically dense compositions where the decorative becomes architectural.
