Dylan Cram is a classically trained oil painter and multimedia artist whose works blend the high realism of classical painting with the fraught imagery of contemporaneity.
Stemming from time working in the film and high art industries and from his academic research on media trends, Cram’s paintings are intended to seduce and repel and therefore complicate the act of looking. With subject matter that fluctuates between the superficial and the evocative, his works forge a new take on painting history, on the role of the viewer, and on the place of painting itself in a world saturated with images designed to impress. -
In his recent works, the aesthetics of high drama are dispersed in a display of colour luminosity, gloss and material, where nothing is quite as it first appears. Here, the ordinary, the kitsch, is continuously slipping between something familiar and something elusive and personal. What is left is the interplay between irony, beauty, humour and desire.
