Oasis of Abstraction

Samantha Battaglia + Lawrence Morton

Opening Reception Nov 29, 3-6pm / Show Nov 29 - Dec 14

Oasis of Abstraction brings together the work of Nova Scotia–based painter Samantha Battaglia and Ontario artist Lawrence Morton. Battaglia’s fractured geometric abstractions evoke shifting architectural and landscape forms, while Morton’s luminous colour fields unfold as meditative horizons. Together, their works create an oasis within abstraction—a space of balance and stillness where form and atmosphere converge, inviting the viewer to pause, reflect, and breathe.

"My work begins with collage, which serves as the foundation of my process and functions as a form of sketching. When these collages are translated into paintings, their constructed layers remain visible in the long, linear segments and flat geometric planes that divide each landscape. Using a natural colour palette, I depict intuitive representations of oceans, forests, rock formations, and dramatic coastal light. By incorporating multiple horizon lines, fractured geometric shadows, and shifting spatial anchors, each composition invites the viewer to move between surface and depth with every viewing."

"My hope is that these works will speak for themselves and create a connection with viewers. But if I had to speak for them I’d say that they–-like most of my work–are all about exploring light and colour. I’ve always been amazed at how even the slightest shift in tonality can create an emotional response, causing you to look closer and deeper. The goal of these pieces is to slow down time and give viewers a chance to reflect. What you see isn’t as important as how you feel."
