Johnny Taylor

  • Johnny Taylor creates his distinctive floral paintings by placing the rich traditional aesthetics of Ikebana Japanese flower arranging and Ukiyo-e woodblock prints into a contemporary composition.

    Beginning with Ikebana’s elegant forms that are suggestively figurative and architectural, the work’s imagery unfolds following Ukiyo-e’s thematic design and intricate patterning while embracing restrained pallets that have a deceptive complexity.

    With his particular vision, Taylor uses these delicate and nuanced notes to broaden the language of his bold and expressive painting, bringing together classic stillife, landscape and abstraction in a harmony of Eastern and Western inspirations.

Johnny Taylor (b. Cobourg 1973) currently lives and works in New York, New York . He has been included in numerous solo and group shows Including Splash The Pendulum Gallery, Vancouver BC, Hidden Cities  Bermudez Projects Los Angeles CA, Trans-Arts Festival Tokyo Japan, Spaceland Bermudez Projects Los Angeles CA, Kinetic Zen, Miller Gallery Edmonton AB, The Big Tiny Show District Gallery Knoxville TN,  Tokyo Lights Bugera Matheson Gallery Edmonton AB.

Taylor was awarded a residency at 3331 Chiyoda Arts Centre in Tokyo Japan in 2015 exhibiting alongside fellow international artists, Taylor was selected as a merit scholarship candidate at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. He has been featured in Ion Magazine, The Vancouver Sun, The Vancouver Observer, Scout Magazine and Artweek LA. He is represented by McQueen Agency across Western Canada, and has recently collaborated with Burritt Brothers Fine Flooring on a series of custom designed rugs for their notable Artist series. Works by the artist are held in private and public collections throughout North America, Europe and Japan.
