Lawrence Morton
-
Lawrence Morton is a Toronto-based color field artist whose goal is to create large luminous works that add a spark of joy and beauty to people’s lives.
His painting process typically begins by stripping down his subject matter to its essence and applying multiple layers of transparent colour. Over time, the colours interact, overlap and coalesce, creating a sense of depth and interest.
He works in oils, taking advantage of their unique lustre, richness, and long drying time. His process is gradual and deliberate. Some pieces can come together within days while others take weeks or even months to complete. -
Inspired by artists such as Jules Olitski, Leon Berkowtiz and Mark Rothko, his work represents an escape from our fast-paced world—to a place where time slows down and even stands still, allowing viewers a moment of reflection or quiet contemplation.
Largely self-taught, he studied art at Queen’s University and the Toronto School of Art and was awarded a grant to the Chateau d’Orquevaux Residency Program in France. When he’s not making messes in the studio, you can find him hanging out with his family and their two dogs, getting lost in a good book, playing piano, or cheering on the Toronto Raptors.
